Bupa staff take their DIY skills back to school

1 August 2007

A team of 14 employees from Bupa UK Health Insurance in Salford Quays, Manchester have transformed a redundant community room at a local school into a stimulating learning facility for both adults and children alike. It marks the end of term for individuals attending the Bupa Academy – a year long management training scheme for the company's stars of the future.

The newly renovated room at St Philip's School, Salford, will now be put to good use by both the school children and their parents. In particular, it will provide an environment for adult learning in a number of subject areas from basic nutrition and food hygiene to finance management.

By involving community initiatives in Bupa's management training programme, staff have the opportunity to learn skills in project management and team building, whilst also completing activities that benefit their local community.

The Bupa team put their DIY and decorating skills to the test during this particular challenge. In addition to designing a totally new look and feel for the school's community room, they also funded all of the paint, decorations, blinds and flooring.

In order to meet these costs, the team carried out a number of fundraising initiatives in advance of the renovation work at St Philip's School. These included: a "blue-bag collection" (a donation of clothes in exchange for money); a bag-packing service at a local supermarket in return for donations; and an energetic contribution from Academy member Paul Longstaff who received sponsorship for running the Windermere marathon.

Bupa's Gill Doolan, one of the management trainees involved in the St Philip's school project, said: "It has been a year of hard work but finishing on such a high note with the completion of the community room makes it all worthwhile. We're all really proud of the difference that we feel we have made to the local community."

Hazel Brady, headmistress at St Philip's School, said: "The transformation of the room has been phenomenal. We really would like to thank the team from Bupa for working so hard to turn it into a more pleasant and inviting environment for the school children and their parents."

This initiative helps to demonstrate the way in which Bupa's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme of initiatives supports the organisation's business objectives. The ongoing CSR programme focuses on providing help and support to the local communities in which Bupa employees live and work. Other recent activities in the Manchester area have included the renovation of two local schools, a hospice, warehouse and shop as well as helping to spruce up a number of allotments in the area.
