Leeds-based care home provider in the running for CBI award
4 September 2007
Leeds-based Bupa Care Homes is in the running for another prestigious national award, after it was short-listed for the CBI Human Capital Awards.
The company's Personal Best people development programme has been recognised in the CBI's service category - making Bupa Care Homes the only care provider in the final stage of the awards.
The CBI Award celebrates and rewards the impact of the UK's top–performing people programmes. The short listing is the second time that the programme has been recognised – as last year Bupa Care Homes won the Chartered Institute of People Development's top national award, the People Management Award, for Personal Best.
Dean Cowley, sales and marketing director of Bupa Care Services said: "We're really pleased to be short-listed for this award. It recognises that alll our 26,000 staff are committed to making a real difference to the happiness and well-being of the people we care for. They really understand that it's often the little things that mean a lot."
The Personal Best programme encourages carers in Bupa's 300 care homes to understand the needs of each resident and helps care assistants to develop the skills they need to offer personalised care tailored to the individual.
The programme has led to changes that help residents feel more at home, for example, getting chickens for the home's garden for a resident who had kept livestock all his life, a male care assistant volunteering to be shaved by female care assistants so they could get feedback on the best way to shave male residents, and staff being lifted in and out of bed so they can better understand the issues facing people who are immobile.
Bupa's Personal Best programme was launched in March 2004. Less than three years later Bupa Care Homes has received its highest ever satisfaction score among residents and as a result the programme is set to be rolled out among Bupa's care homes in Spain.
Bupa will join a variety of other short listed companies at the CBI Human Capital Awards such as Sainsbury's, BT, KPMG and British Gas as they celebrate the impact of people and HR-led programmes on the business performance and profitability of organisations across the UK.
