Enterprising Edinburgh engineer wins top innovation award
5 July 2005
Bupa’s brightest and most innovative talent has been recognised at the company’s annual "One Life Awards" held at the Royal Opera House in London.
Singled out were those Bupa employees that have come up with the best, most creative business ideas to be adopted by the company, and those who have given exceptional service.
One of the winners was Robson Kidd, an engineer at Bupa Murrayfield Hospital in Edinburgh. He collected an Idea of the Year Award after he came up with the brainstorm to stop money pouring down the drain and reduce the risk of passing on infection in the hospital.
The enterprising engineer says: “The hospital was undergoing a major refurbishment and I was determined to come up with a better solution to hand washing basins so they could be turned on without people having to use their hands.
"I tracked down a system that could be operated by people’s knees eradicating all hand contact thus improving infection control and which also had an automatic cut off, saving water and money."
The idea has already attracted significant interest from both the Care Commission and Environmental Health inspectorates.
More than 2,200 ideas have been dreamt up by Bupa’s creative minds over the past twelve months. 460 of those innovations have been implemented, from which, a shortlist of 34 were drawn up for the awards.
Eight winners were then chosen.
Recognition scheme manager Sally Gardiner, who organises the annual event, says: "All these people have made a significant personal contribution to realising Bupa’s vision of ‘taking care of the lives in our hands’.
"They epitomise the rich diversity of talent and expertise of Bupa employees and what is impressive is that more than 20 percent of these ideas have been implemented. This compares with a success rate of just four or five percent in most other organisations, who like us have more than 10,000 employees."
Also announced at the awards luncheon were the winners of Bupa’s Annual Excellence Awards. Ten individuals were chosen from dozens of employees recognised for excelling beyond role expectations.
Bupa employees from all over the world, including people from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Spain, Thailand and Australia attended the event.
