Bupa volunteers transform garden at local children's centre

7 June 2007

A group of budding Alan Titchmarsh’s and Charlie Dimmock’s from Bupa Health Insurance swapped their desks for diggers as they transformed a patch of weeds into a glorious garden in time for the open day of the Sure Start Children’s Centre in Manchester.

Eight volunteers from the Bupa offices in Salford Quays decided a day away from their computers would be the perfect team-building exercise.

Their hard work at the Sure Start Children’s Centre in Gorton began with rotavating part of the garden to create a vegetable patch and continued throughout the day as they set about digging up weeds, replanting hanging baskets and planting flower beds.

Not only will the children now benefit from a new place to learn and play but, thanks to Bupa, they will also look the part – they’ve been kitted out with new aprons, trowels, watering cans and wellies.

The creative skills of Bupa’s green-fingered group were also put to the test when two giant tree trunks were delivered. By the end of the day these had been fashioned into a seating area, giving the children somewhere to sit and enjoy their new green oasis.

The Sure Start centre provides affordable day care to almost 40 children and also offers many other essential services for parents including a crèche, playgroups, links with the local Jobcentre and family support and advice.

Lynda Warburton, a PA at Bupa Health Insurance and one of the volunteers on the day, said: "The new garden looks fantastic and everything is now in place for the centre’s open day. We hope the children enjoy using the new garden as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it. What a great way to spend a team-building day – giving something back to our local community."

Bupa Community Connections supported the team’s efforts by funding all the equipment and materials needed. Set up in 2001, Bupa Community Connections co-ordinates staff involvement and develops partnerships in the local communities in which Bupa operates in.
