Bupa staff launch 18-month campaign to aid local communities

10 July 2008

Up to 1,500 Bupa staff will be participating in the company’s largest ever volunteering project - a major drive over the next 18-months to help local communities and charities near Bupa’s call centres in Salford Quays, Manchester and Staines, in Middlesex.

Employees can choose from more than 100 team initiatives including decorating a local respite centre, repairing broken fences and renovating gardens at a local school, as well as revamping bedrooms for residents at a Mencap care home. Staff are also being encouraged to suggest a cause of their own which may be close to their heart.

Oke Eleazu, customer service and operations director for Bupa UK health insurance, said: “The project is one of the most ambitious of its kind and underlines our commitment to support the communities in which we work. It also gives our staff the opportunity to build team spirit and develop skills which can be brought back into the workplace. This is backed up by our own research from a recent Bupa initiative where 94 percent of the volunteers said they developed new skills that they could use at work such as problem solving and public speaking.”

One of the first projects in Staines will see 14 people decorate a local church hall where a respite care centre for older people is being set up to provide a break for their carers. Meanwhile 15 staff from Salford Quays recently volunteered at an animal rescue centre where they redeveloped the courtyard to brighten up the sanctuary for visitors.

Brain Donaghy, from the Animals in Distress Sanctuary, said: “The team from Bupa that helped out at our sanctuary were brilliant. They went way beyond my expectations and everyone who works or visits the sanctuary will benefit hugely from their work.”

Last year, nearly 4,000 Bupa people volunteered in their local communities.
