A bright idea wins Global Award for Bupa Care Home Manager
14 July 2008
A Dartford nursing home manager has been selected from more than 55,000 Bupa employees worldwide for a top award after creating a way to improve services for residents in care homes.
The manager of Priory Mews Nursing Home, Rachel Gilbert was presented with an Annual Idea award by Bupa’s chief executive Ray King at a special ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London, alongside colleagues from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Copenhagen, Spain and the Middle East.
The Idea award is part of a programme established in 1998 called Bupa One Life, which is run across the organisation to recognise and reward excellence.
While Priory Mews is officially rated as a good home by inspectors, Rachel could see that it was also important to hear the opinions of other professionals in regular contact with the home.
“I could see there was a need for GPs, district nurses, social workers and other support agencies to let us know their opinions, so I established a questionnaire where they can tell us their thoughts about areas for improvement in care and service,” Rachel said.
Regional Manager for Bupa Care Homes Kerry John said that since the initiative started in Dartford it has now been rolled out to other care homes in the region, with plans underway for it to go national.
“The questionnaire is helping us to provide the best possible services for residents and their families,” Kerry said. “Furthermore the independent quality inspectors, who rate the care homes, have positively endorsed the idea as another way to gather information about a care home.”
Award winner Rachel Gilbert said she hoped receiving the reward was one way of recognising all the great work that employees in care homes do every day to support their residents.
“Initially I was thrilled to win a local award and be able to attend the ceremony, but then to be presented with an Annual Idea award caught me totally by surprise, it was truly an amazing feeling,” she added.
