Consumers risk being misled by online health advice
17 January 2003
Bupa has produced a guide to help surfers access safe, accurate health information on-line. This is in response to an increase in people looking for reliable health information on the web. A recent Datamonitor survey showed that almost 60 per cent of people in Europe looking for health information in the last year have accessed the Internet in search of answers. To make sure that consumers surfing online can make informed decisions Bupa's guide provides information on how to locate trustworthy and relevant information amongst the bewildering choice of health websites on the Internet.
Dr Annabel Bentley, head of Bupa's health information service said: "There are millions of health web sites on the net and it is often difficult to distinguish those offering good advice based on sound medical research from those offering unproven, unnecessary or even dangerous treatments. Unfortunately some medical web sites are based on incorrect advice and following this will do more harm than good. These sites typically target people who want to lose weight quickly or who have a serious condition such as cancer or AIDS. They usually claim to have an amazing 'miracle cure' and cruelly take advantage of sick and vulnerable people by offering false hope. The new Bupa online health information guide will help put a stop to consumers being misled."
The guide contains useful advice on how to get the most out of search enquiries, such as how to use advanced search facilities, why to opt for web directories over automated search engines as they are written by people working in the health sector and focus on more relevant information.
