Bupa care centre voted a top employer for nurses
17 April 2008
Bupa’s Wingham Court Care Centre has been voted one of the country’s top 10 places for nurses to work at a prestigious annual awards ceremony.
Judges of the Nursing Times Top 100, which rewards the best places for nurses to work, placed the centre in Claygate, Surrey, at number 10 in their list, alongside large organisations such as NHS trusts and even the Royal Navy’s nursing service.
They were impressed by the centre’s training and development of its 25 nurses, especially the way nurses are encouraged to take on extended roles ranging from end-of-life care to caring for residents with complex disabilities.
The Nursing Times judges also commented on the professionalism shown by the team who care for more than 70 residents, many of whom have complex and challenging needs covering both physical and behavioural issues. Wingham Court also runs mentoring schemes and helps train nurses who are undergoing university courses.
Wingham Court manager Jackie Sylvester said: "We were delighted by this recognition. Everyone here works extremely hard to give the best individual care possible to our residents, all of whom who have very complex conditions.
"Nurses find the work here demanding – but very satisfying. We encourage nurses to extend their roles and gain new skills and then ensure they have the opportunities to put them into practice."
Another plus point for the judges was the success of flexible working arrangements, and recruitment and retention of staff, meaning that the nursing centre does not need agency cover – ensuring continuity of care for residents.
Human resources director for Bupa Care Homes, Julia Hurst, said: "Everyone in Bupa is proud of what the team at Wingham Court has achieved. It shows that there is a rewarding career for nurses in care homes and I hope it will encourage more of them to consider entering the sector."
