Bupa Hospital Harpenden uses pedal power to help children’s cancer charity

19 July 2007

Blind physiotherapist, Yvonne McCarthy from Bupa Hospital Harpenden, accompanied a team of 26 staff, doctors and friends in this years London to Oxford bike ride in aid of Caring for Children with Cancer (CLIC Sargent).

Yvonne and her team mate Graham Spencer completed the race on a tandem in five hours fifty minutes. Yvonne took the rear seat on the bike and relied on her trusty team mate Graham to steer the bike along the tiring 100km course. After several hours of training together prior to the race Yvonne and Graham helped the Bupa staff raise more than £1,500 for CLIC, which will be matched by Community Connections.

The ride was organised to raise money for the charity Caring for Children with Cancer that provides support to families when the unimaginable happens. Every 48 hours ten children are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia. CLIC Sargent acts as a lifeline keeping families together and providing clinical, psychosocial, emotional and financial support to both the children and their families.

Beginning in Ealing, London and ending an exhausting 62 miles later in Oxford the bike ride finished on a competitive note with five of the 26 Bupa team mates securing top 20 places in the overall ranking order.

Helen Sellars, business development coordinator at Bupa Hospital Harpenden, commented on the success of her colleagues: "The prospect of cycling 62 miles from London to Oxford was certainly a challenge. The staff, doctors and friends at the Bupa Hospital really pulled together and the team work shown by Yvonne and Graham should be particularly commended. The fundraising for Caring for Children with Cancer made the exceptional teamwork and effort very worthwhile indeed. A great achievement for a great cause!"

The Bupa representatives from Harpenden had a very enjoyable, rewarding and tiring day. With no major injuries, other than aches and pains, they are all raring to give it another go next year!
