Middlesbrough maintenance man wins bravery award

Middlesbrough-man Stephen Fishwick, who works at Bupa's St Mary's Nursing Home, has received an award from the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire for his role in the catching and conviction of a criminal.
While out walking his dogs earlier this year, Stephen stepped in when he saw an attacker trying to mug an elderly couple. He caught the thief and detained her until the police arrived.
"When I saw what was happening, I let go of my dogs, ran straight over and grabbed the thief," recalled 51-year-old Stephen. "She bit me and we had a scuffle. I restrained her and she was still fighting to escape when the police came, but I wouldn't let her go."
The attacker was subsequently tried and sentenced to one year in prison. Stephen has now been presented with a certificate and financial award in recognition of his bravery by Philip Ingham, the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire.
Jacqui Elliott, home manager at Bupa's St Mary's Nursing Home, said: "We're very proud to have such a public-spirited man working with us and delighted to see his courage recognised."
Stephen is responsible for maintenance at St Mary's and has worked at the home since October 2006. He lives in Eston.
