Bupa Manchester wins celebrity support for charity cook book

20 November 2007

Manchester-based Bupa employees have convinced top celebrity chefs, including Gordon Ramsey, Brian Turner and Delia Smith, to donate recipes to a cook book produced to raise funds for three cancer charities and celebrate the company's 60th anniversary.

The book, Around the World in Sixty Dishes, goes on sale today. The Bupa team also secured contributions from their colleagues across the globe - including Spain, Bolivia and the Middle East - who donated recipes to the publication.

Through sales of Around the World in Sixty Dishes, plus a contribution of £5,000 by the company itself, Bupa aims to raise an estimated £30,000 for cancer charities. Funds raised will be split equally between Cancer Research UK, The Christie's Appeal for the Christie's Hospital in Manchester and The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign.

The idea for the recipe book was conceived by Lindsey Ash, a Customer Relations Executive at Bupa UK Health Insurance's Manchester office, who worked with Mark Elwood, Ceri Sloan and Helen Wade to make the idea reality. The project is supported by Bupa through its Community Connections initiative, which encourages employees to volunteer help and support to the local communities in which they live and work.

Lindsey Ash said: "Producing Around the World in Sixty Dishes has been an excellent opportunity to celebrate Bupa's 60th anniversary while raising money to support three charities that research and treat cancer - a cause that is very close to many people's hearts."

One of Britain's best loved chefs Brian Turner, who contributed a recipe for rack of lamb with parsley crust, said: "I am happy to share the secret of one of my favourite traditional recipes to benefit those with cancer and to support research into a disease that devastates so many lives. Well done to the staff at Bupa for their initiative and I would like to encourage support for what has been a tremendous effort in personal time for an important cause."

Bupa is committed to exceeding the Business in the Community benchmark of donating over one percent of pre-tax profit annually and, during 2006, the Group donated the equivalent of £5.3m to charities and community projects.

The recipe book retails for £5 with all profits going to charity. For more information or to purchase the recipe book, please log onto Bupa's new online shop: www.bupa.co.uk/cookbook
