Bupa raises the bar for care of the elderly & young disabled in Surrey

24 September 2007

Bupa’s promise to both extend capacity and improve standards in the care home sector is marked by its £500,000 refurbishment of Wingham Court Care Centre in Claygate, Surrey.

Ade Adepitan MBE, bronze medallist at the Paralympics in Athens in 2004 as well as a silver and gold medallist in the European and World Championships respectively, will make a guest appearance at an important event to mark the official relaunch of the centre on Wednesday 3 October.

Wingham Court Care Centre, catering equally for physically disabled and the elderly, has undergone an extensive refurbishment programme. All 73 en-suite bedrooms have been stylishly redecorated. In addition, broadband internet access and flat screen televisions have been fitted in all rooms. Electronic profiling beds have also been installed. These remote controlled beds help restore independence by giving residents the support they need to sit up and get in and out of bed on their own.

Meanwhile, the communal areas now benefit from new lighting and lounges with 42 inch plasma televisions and satellite channels. A new kitchen and dining room, with low-level worktops and other features designed for wheelchair users, have been installed to allow residents to cook and eat within their own area of the home. There is also a new self-service café bar for residents to mingle and meet friends and relatives. Other features include an on-site pysiotherapy suite, a super-sized garden chess set, crazy golf and a cyber café with full computer access, webcam facilities and keyboards designed specifically for disabled users. Newly fitted automatic electric opening doors in the entrance enable residents ease of access into Wingham Court.

Bupa Care Services’ Oliver Thomas, regional director, South East, said: “Careful consideration has been given to the needs of our residents which, in turn, have been matched with modern solutions. The aim was to make the home as comfortable as possible and to afford residents maximum independence. The contemporary feel of the home reflects our aim to ensure that it appeals to young physically disabled people, as well as the elderly.”
