St Peter's hospital gets a "green" makeover
25 July 2007
A green-fingered team of volunteers from Bupa UK Health Insurance in Staines, have today transformed an overgrown wilderness into an oasis of calm and tranquillity for patients at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey. The garden was greatly welcomed by staff at the NHS hospital, as the area had become neglected due to budget constraints.
The team of 25 employees from Bupa’s finance team were rallied together by telesales trainer Amanda Oughton who wanted to thank the staff on the hospital’s childrens ward for the care and treatment her 7 year-old son received following a skiing accident.
It involved the team fighting their way through mountainous weeds. They also painted fences, benches and sheds in an effort to transform the garden into a much brighter and appealing area for the children. It is hoped that the new and improved area will help speed up the recovery process for the children by ensuring that there is a safe outdoor environment in which they can relax and play with their friends and families.
Carolyn Slater, project leader for the finance team at Bupa, comments: “It is great to give something back to the local community in which many of the finance team members live and work. Tackling the overgrown garden was very satisfying as we saw quite a contrast in the before and after versions.”
This activity day forms part of Bupa’s corporate social responsibility programme of initiatives, which focuses on providing help and support to the local communities in which Bupa employees live and work.
The team from Staines has not only completed the St Peter’s Hospital activity but they have also carried out several other projects including the extremely successful "Book Buddies" programme, which involves volunteers going in to local schools to help children develop their reading skills.
