Bupa Care Services wins award for patient safety initiatives
29 October 2008
Bupa Care Services has been awarded the 2008 Pharma Award for Patient Safety Initiatives, for its pioneering medication management programme, which focuses on raising medication management standards across its 304 UK care homes.
The programme has resulted in improvements in all aspects of the medicines management process, from obtaining and receiving medication, to its administration and final disposal. Its success has even resulted in praise from the independent watchdog, the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI).
Paula Keys, one of the company’s two heads of operational compliance collected the award on behalf of the project team involved.
The awards judges praised the collaborative approach that the process introduced, saying it "focused on building robust relationships between Bupa care homes and pharmacy providers".
Speaking about the award, Paula said: "Our residents’ safety is our top priority, and with thousands of residents taking lots of different medications, it can be very complicated. This project has brought significant improvements in medicine management within our homes to ensure that our residents’ wellbeing is protected. I was honoured to receive the award on behalf of the whole project team at Bupa."
Paula and her colleague Helga Goutcher are both heads of operational compliance within Bupa Care Services’ newly formed, dedicated quality and compliance team. Headed up by a board-level quality and compliance director, it reflects the company’s commitment to driving through quality improvement across all 304 UK care homes.
